Cannabis Social Equity

Social Equity in the Cannabis Industry What is Social Equity? Social equity is the fair, just, and reasonable management of organizations serving the public through public policy. It is the recognition that past practices have harmed certain communities and strives to create a better community for all. Cannabis Social Equity It’s no secret that the prohibition of cannabis has led to adverse impacts on certain individuals – namely, those who would like to hold legal licenses in the cannabis industry but have prior marijuana offenses. To counter this, many states and cities have implemented cannabis social equity programs in the medical or adult-use cannabis markets. These programs are meant to help ensure that those who have marijuana offenses before legalization are allowed to participate in a meaningful way. Today, there are 15 Social Equity programs in the U.S. in legal, recreational and medical markets. According to the Minority Cannabis Business Association (MCBA) National Cannabis Equity Report, despite broadly stated support for addressing the harms of cannabis prohibition and creating diversity in the cannabis industry, the barriers to entry for minority operators have continued to stifle progress to advance social equity efforts. Their key findings address several issues and conclusions to ask advocates and lawmakers to consider for social equity programs. Colorado Social Equity Program The Colorado Department of Revenue’s Marijuana Enforcement Division (MED) Social Equity Program has outlined eligibility criteria for a Social Equity Licensee to participate in the program, which helps applicants independently own and operate a Regulated Marijuana Business license. The MED states it “is committed to fostering an inclusive and equitable cannabis industry in Colorado that acknowledges the effects of decades of criminal enforcement of marijuana laws on communities of color.” Bud & Mary’s is proud to support Cannabis Social Equity initiatives in the cannabis industry through partnerships with Social Equity license holders. This was made possible by their dedication and passion for the cannabis industry and through Colorado’s Social Equity program. Currently, Social Cannabis operates six locations across Denver, Golden and Louisville. Be.Social Community and Bud & Mary’s One of the pillars that has made Social Cannabis stand out is their Be.Social Community program, where they partner with cannabis brands to give back to communities where they operate. For every unit sold from a participating brand including Batch Extracts, Social Cannabis donates $.50 to a local non-profit. As of March 2025, Be. Social and their partners raised and donated $53,760 to 10 charities, including charities that support social equity activation, hunger relief, and health-focused organizations. Be.Social supports Social Cannabis’ mission to build a stronger, more compassionate community where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. This aligns with Bud & Mary’s mission to spread good vibes and to enhance well-being, inspire creativity, and build community. Bienvenidos Food Bank Bienvenidos Food Bank in Denver is Social Cannabis’ Q3 2025 Be.Social Community non-profit charity. Founded in 1976, this organization provides food for individuals and families in a safe and welcoming space. They serve as a beacon of hope for thousands of Colorado children, seniors, and families struggling to put food on the table. Be. Social’s goal is to donate $10,000 to Bienenidos Food Bank.
