Types of Pre-Rolls and How to Roll Joints

Are you joint shopping and need some guidance on what to buy? Pre-rolled joints come in a variety of styles beyond the classic cone you see in dispensaries. Learn the differences between the different types of pre-rolls to select what’s best for you. Or if you want to roll your own, read on for tips on how to roll joints or how to pack a pre-rolled cone.

What are the Main Types of Pre-Rolls?

Pre-rolled joints come in different styles and weights depending on how much you want to consume and the type of papers and style you prefer.

Standard Pre-Rolls include classic cones or straight rolled joints, usually in standard 1-¼ inch or larger King Size papers. They can come in different weights, commonly ranging from ¼ gram to 1 gram or more of cannabis flower.

  • Classic Cone – The most common style, narrow at the filter and wider at the tip for an even burn.
  • Straight (Cylinder) – Evenly shaped like a cigarette, not tapered.

Multi-Joint Packs
are popular cannabis products at dispensaries because they are portable, great for socializing, and you can often get more joints for less. They can come in child-proof tins or cases with dividers. Some common types include:

  • Dogwalkers / Minis – Small, short pre-rolls (0.25–0.5 gram) designed for a quick solo session.
  • Multi-Pack Slims or Cones – Several thin or cone joints in a pack, good for sharing with friends or pacing yourself.

Infused Pre-Rolls are joints that are infused with a cannabis concentrate making them potent and often flavorful. The flower can be mixed with the concentrate before being rolled or the concentrate can be put on the outside of the joint. Types of infused pre-rolls include:

  • Wax / Hash or Distillate Oil Infused – Cannabis rolled with added concentrate for higher potency.
  • Kief-Dusted – Rolled in kief (trichomes) for an extra kick.
  • Diamonds or Live Resin Infused – Premium pre-rolls with high-end cannabis extracts inside or outside the paper.

How Do You Roll a Joint?

After learning about pre-roll options, let’s look at how to roll your own joint from scratch. Rolling joints is an art and usually takes time and practice to master and refine. Here are tips on how to get started and how to manually roll joints.

What you’ll need:

  • Rolling papers (size of your choice) usually in 1-1/4 inch, 1-1/2 inch or larger King Size papers that can include Rice Papers, Hemp Papers, Flavored Papers or Pre-Rolled Cones (see below for how to pack pre-rolled cones).
  • Cannabis flower ground up with fingers or a grinder.
  • A crutch/filter tip (optional, but makes it sturdier).
  • Flat surface or rolling tray.

Steps for Rolling a Joint:

  1. Grind the cannabis
Break your flower into an even, fluffy texture. Avoid large chunks or powder—aim for a medium consistency. If it is too fine, it can clog your joint and if it is too chunky it can generate air pockets that will keep the air from flowing nicely.
  2. Prepare the crutch (optional but recommended)
Roll a small piece of thick paper or a premade filter tip into a cylinder. This creates a mouthpiece, making the joint easier to hold and smoke.
  3. Fill the paper
Hold the paper with the glue strip facing you, gum side up. Place the crutch at one end. Sprinkle the ground cannabis evenly across the crease.
  4. Shape it
Gently pinch the paper between your fingers and roll it back and forth to form the cannabis into a cylinder.
  5. Roll it up
Tuck the unglued side of the paper over the cannabis, then roll upward until only the sticky strip is exposed. Lick or lightly moisten the glue and seal the joint shut.
  6. Pack it
Use a pen, toothpick, or the tip of your grinder to gently pack the open end. This ensures an even burn. Twist the excess paper at the tip to close it.
  7. Light & enjoy
Light the twisted end evenly, gently twisting it to get all sides, with a lighter while taking a slow puff to avoid an uneven burn of the paper.
  8. Puff Puff & Pass
Proper weed etiquette (in case you are unaware) is to take two nice puffs and then pass it to your friend if you are sharing the joint (don’t forget to flick the tip in an ashtray before you pass if the tip has a lot of ash).

How to Pack Pre-rolled Joints

Some people use cones (pre-shaped papers) to make the process easier—you just fill and pack them. Read these tips below from Blazy Susan, our joint sesh experts and friends to pack a Pre-rolled cone the right way. If you aren’t sure on what size of pre-rolled cone to get check out the Blazy Susan Pre-Rolled Cone Sizes guide.

Step 1: Grind Your Weed

When grinding your cannabis flower, again aim for a medium consistency. Go for a fluffy feel and clean burn.

Step 2: Hold and Load

Your cone needs to be held in an upright position, we recommend using your fingers and placing it between. Little by little start adding the ground weed into the cone. Be patient and add a little bit at a time.

Step 3: Pack as You Go

Every few pinches, make sure you gently press down the weed but don’t overdo it, it will restrict the air from flowing and you will end up with an almost unsmokable joint. You can pack it in with a short stick if needed. Ensure you press just enough to create a uniform fill that feels solid without being too tight.

Step 4: Layer after Layer

You might as well think of it as a series of layers. Add a bit of weed and then tap it down, then repeat. This is the best way to ensure an even burn from the base to the tip. Remember you don’t want your pre-roll to canoe.

Step 5: Twist and Smoke

Once the filling process is done, twist the excess paper at the top to seal it. It is the last touch, now you are ready to enjoy your pre-rolled cone.
