What are Cannabis Vapes?

Types, How They Work & Tips

Batch Vape

Cannabis vaporizers are devices designed to heat cannabis flower, cannabis oil, or concentrates to a temperature that releases its active ingredients, including cannabinoids and terpenes, as a vapor. Rather than lighting cannabis with fire and producing smoke, vapes electronically heat cannabis to the optimal temperature so it doesn’t combust or burn.

Medical and recreational customers enjoy cannabis vapor for a variety of uses and reasons. Vapes are one of the most popular methods of consuming cannabis because of their effectiveness, flavor, discreetness, and ease of use.

Key Features of Cannabis Vaporizers

Understanding the types of vaporizers used for vaping cannabis and their methods of heating can help you operate vape devices and discover the benefits.

Types of Vaporizers:

Portable Vaporizers are small, battery-powered devices for on-the-go use.

Flut vaporizer

Desktop Vaporizers like Volcanos or Flut vapes are plug-in or battery-operated devices primarily used at home.

    • Dry Herb Vaporizers: These devices are used for vaporizing ground cannabis flower. Dry herb vapes can be portable weed pens or desktop devices. They are handheld and battery-powered (e.g., Pax, GPen).

    • Concentrate Vaporizers (or Wax Pens): Designed for cannabis concentrates like wax, shatter, or live resin for “dabs” or hits of vapor. Wax pens can be portable or desktop devices.

    • Cannabis Oil Vaporizers (Vape Pens): Pre-filled cannabis oil cartridges or vape carts are made to be screwed or locked into a battery. Vape pens can refer to disposable vape pens with pre-charged batteries attached to an oil reservoir thus why they are called all-in-one vape pens.

Methods of Heating Vape Devices:

    • Conduction: Heats the cannabis by direct contact with a hot surface.

    • Convection: Heats the air around or through the cannabis (like a toaster oven), providing more even heating and better flavor.

    • Hybrid: Combines both conduction and convection heating methods for better efficiency and flavor.

Benefits of Vaporizers:

    • Reduced Burning: No combustion with vapes means fewer harmful byproducts compared to smoking. Just remember to check your battery settings to start with a low voltage.

    • Discretion: Vaporizers produce less odor and smoke and are often more portable and discreet.

    • Efficiency: Vaporizers can extract more cannabinoids and terpenes from the material. Because of their efficient delivery method, most users feel the effects immediately or shortly after. So, remember to start with a small puff and go slow!

    • Flavor: Vapor tends to have a purer taste than smoke thanks to preserved terpenes. Start with a low setting on your battery so that it doesn’t burn as many terpenes resulting in more flavor.

How do dry herb vaporizers work?

Dry herb vaporizers are devices designed to heat cannabis flower just enough to release cannabinoids and terpenes as vapor—without burning the plant material. This allows for inhalation of the active compounds without the harmful byproducts of combustion.

Dry herb vapes have several parts that make them work including a heating chamber, heat source, mouthpiece, and of course, the best part – the vapor.

1. Heating Chamber

Grind your cannabis flower and place it into the chamber. This chamber is usually made from ceramic, metal, or glass and is built to evenly heat the herb.

2. Heat Source

The vaporizer heats the cannabis flower to a temperature typically between 330°F to 430°F (165°C to 220°C)—below the point of combustion (~451°F/233°C). As mentioned, there are two main types of heating applicable to dry herb vapes, conduction or convection or a hybrid of both.

3. Mouthpiece

The heat causes trichomes (tiny, crystal-like structures on the flower) to melt and release cannabinoids (THC, CBD, etc.) and terpenes as a fine vapor. This vapor travels through a mouthpiece to be inhaled.

4. Vapor

You inhale the vapor, which delivers the effects without the tar or toxins found in smoke. Many devices are draw-activated (just inhale) or button-activated (press and hold to heat) before inhaling the vapor.

Tips for Use:

    • Use a grinder to create an even texture of your cannabis buds for better vaporization.

    • Don’t overpack the chamber—airflow is crucial.

    • Stir the bowl halfway through the session for even heating.

    • Empty and clean the chamber regularly to avoid buildup and clogging.

How do vape pens work?

Woman enjoying a Batch vapeCannabis oil vape pens can refer to a cartridge attached to a battery, or an all-in-one (AIO) vape that comes with the battery already built in and attached.

A cannabis cartridge or reservoir is filled with cannabis oil such as distillate or live resin that contains concentrated cannabinoids like THC and/or CBD, often with added terpenes for flavor and effect.

Cannabis cartridges are usually glass-filled reservoirs filled with concentrate that have an attachable end. Carts and AIO vapes come in different weights including .5 grams, 1 gram or 2 gram vapes. The types of cartridges include:

    • 510-thread (universal, screw-on type).

    • Proprietary pods (like PAX or Stiiizy, designed for specific devices).

Vape pen key elements

  1. The Heating Element (Atomizer)
Inside the cannabis cartridge is a coil or wick that heats up when powered. This heats the cannabis oil just enough to turn it into vapor, not smoke. Temperatures usually range from 315°F to 440°F (157°C to 227°C)—hot enough to vaporize cannabinoids and terpenes but not burn plant matter.
  2. The Battery (Vape Pen)

The battery provides the power to heat the oil. Most are button-activated or draw-activated (you just inhale to trigger it). Some batteries allow temperature/voltage control to adjust vapor thickness and flavor.

  3. Mouthpiece

Once the oil is vaporized, you inhale the vapor through the mouthpiece. The effects (psychoactive or therapeutic) are felt relatively quickly, usually within a few minutes. If you are new to vape pens remember to start with a small puff and see how you feel.

Advantages of Cannabis Oil Vapes

    • Discreet: Minimal odor and compact size.

    • Convenient: Pre-filled and easy to use.

    • Precise: Often labeled with THC/CBD percentages.

    • Flavorful: Preserved terpenes offer distinct strain or fruit flavors.

Cannabis Vape Pen Tips

Here are a few things to watch for and some best practices so you have a safe, reliable cannabis vape experience!

    • Additives: Avoid carts with harmful thinning agents like vitamin E acetate (linked to lung injury in the past).

    • Legitimacy: Use products from licensed dispensaries or trusted brands to avoid counterfeit or unsafe carts.

    • Storage: Keep upright in a cool place to prevent leaks or oil degradation. Avoid leaving your vape in extremely hot or cold places.
